I learned of McNaught Construction Limited from a friend for whom they were doing a significant alteration. I inspected the job and could see immediately that the quality of their workmanship (and that of their selected sub-trades) was absolutely top-class. When I approached Garry to talk about the possibility of his Company doing a substantial re-build for me we quickly established that we had similarly high standards and we shared a strong desire to create something special.

The ensuing discussions around pricing and the addressing of any issues which arose during the build were undertaken in an atmosphere of total openness and with a common understanding that the arrangement needed to work for both parties. Throughout the 12-month project the entire team were a pleasure to have on site. They respected us and our property and they put their hearts into the job as if it were their own. Garry’s son John has been absolutely delightful to deal with as Project Manager and the on-site Foreman Simon is an absolute ‘stand-out’ tradesman.

We are thrilled with and immensely proud of what has been achieved and the outcome is a credit to the McNaught Team. Anyone can knock up a building…very few can build and achieve what McNaughts have done for us.

Home owner

CLASSIC 80s TO 21st CENTURY MODERN

In 2015, we renovated a family home in Milford on Auckland’s North Shore. Constructed in the 1980s, one architect described its disorderly geometrics and junctions as an “architectural mess.” Our job was to bring the house up to date with a simplistic twenty-first-century design that reflected its beachside location.

The process

There were no significant internal alterations on this project. We did, however, extend the cedar weatherboarding into inside spaces and add wooden internal linings.

The house’s exterior, though, was another story, and the changes were immense.

We stripped the house’s Insulclad™ polystyrene surface right down to its framing. Then, we redesigned and crafted all timber (weatherboards, window facings, barges, and fascia) to be on the same plane. We also completely changed the roofline.

The challenge

At McNaught Construction, we love to test ourselves, and the biggest challenge with this job was making the detail work.

When building a house, typically everything overlaps to make things work. With this project, for aesthetic reasons, everything had to be flush and to make everything work meant milling some timber on site.

The result

We transformed this 1980s chilly-bin home with a parapet roof into a streamlined, modern cedar masterpiece. The owner was so happy with the finished result that we submitted the house into Master Builders Renovation of the Year competition.

RENOVATION WINS GOLD

In 2017, we received a Gold Award in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. We transformed what one architect described as “an architectural mess” into a home of simplistic, twenty-first-century design in keeping with its beachside location.
